Firstly, I must apologize to you guys for my unforeseen absence. I’ve been working hard on expanding my horizons both professionally and personally. -And such deeds, can send your schedule into oblivion. I’d like to thank those of you who even reached out and inquired about where I was… and what the heck happened to the blog! (lol) I appreciate each and every one of you!
As you can see, my recent rendezvous with growth has even trickled down to the new Blank.Bare.Clean header. Since I am rocking a new look, I felt it would only be right to give Blank.Bare.Clean a bit of a revamp also.
While many are straddling the fence on whether to embrace Amber Rose or Solange’s current haircut of choice, I admired such boldness as a Midwestern, pre-teen back in the 90′s; when my mom dared to cut her hair off and rock a fierce fade. I remember the comments my middle school classmates would make when she would come up to my school … “Look at her mom’s hair!” “Ay, I heard somebody call your mom ‘baldheaded’.” “When you get older, are you going to where your hair like that too?”
I am my mother’s daughter. So, I figured if she was bold & beautiful enough to do it… hopefully the apple wouldn’t fall too far from the tree. It looks as if I have joined the quiet riot of women of African descent who are rebuking the ball and chain psyche of adhering to another culture’s ideal of beauty. I’ve spent the past 5 years donning natural hair and singing along with India.Arie’s “I am not my hair”, yet still feeling inadequate if both a hot comb and flat iron were not a part of my hair regimen.
I’m not knocking the straightening of hair. I love the versatility of natural hair and may one day choose to wear my hair straight again. However, natural hair is just that… NATURAL; and until one embraces their own beauty in it’s most natural form, there will always be a lacking in their aptitude to honestly recognize their beauty- even in it’s superficial form. Do you have to cut your hair off to acknowledge this beauty?- Of course not! A commitment to being an authentic person starts from within… but, whose to say what exactly you will be summoned to “cut” out of your life once making such a decision.Popularity: 3%
