Switching Careers before 30 – Am I Crazy??

Tony Hsieh Zappos CEO uses Happiness as business model

It’s the last day of September. 1 o’clock in the morning. It’s raining. A few tears are rolling hotly down my cheeks as I contemplate a thought that has been taking up space in my mind lately. I keep asking myself if I’m crazy to have this dream. Staring at the blinking cursor, I drift off and let the thoughts form in my mind.

2moroDocs: If u r truly unhappy in ur career, you must try to change it. Life 2 short. Maybe take classes & slowly work into it, or leap #genychat

rblake: @Austin_Curtis I’m not – it’s just hard to find a job that matches passion. Especially with limited experience. #genychat

It is now almost 3 o’clock in the morning. It’s still raining; the sound is so soothing and comforting that it somehow makes it acceptable for me to still be so emotional. I’m reading back through the #genychat transcript thinking how serendipitous it is that this topic was so randomly suggested by a regular chatter: @PeterFromOttawa. As I do every week, I asked the community at #genychat for a topic that they would like to discuss. Since his was the only suggestion, and it was a great one, we went with it. Knowing Mark Babbitt, the CEO of YouTern, is such an avid participant in #genychat, I asked if he would be interested in co-hosting the chat. When he accepted I had no idea that the topic of switching careers would cause such a stir in me.

fredmcclimans: Q4: Contemplating a career change? Always consider “opportunity cost” & “quality of life”. Work isn’t success. #genychat

All my life I’ve been the kind of person who fought for the underdog. I almost got into a fight in elementary school protecting a classmate from other kids who were making fun of her. I live for movies where the protagonist succeeds against an evil antagonist attempting to keep them from achieving their dreams. Films that develop a character from a person just trying to survive in the world to one making a difference tug at all the strings of my heart. Lean on Me, Pretty Woman, Dangerous Minds, and The Pursuit of Happyness all come to mind as movies that have made a lasting impact on my mindset; but, it’s hard to be the kind of person that I am.

YouTernMark: Personally, I had a choice… be happy & short-term poor(er)… or do what I was expected to do & make money… I like being happy #genychat

This world doesn’t value idealists. We get called naïve and are instructed to get real about life. Be logical. Be practical. Do what everybody else is doing because that is just the way things work. Everyone has an angle and no one is genuinely trying to help people. Anyone who says they are is not actually making any money and is too high-minded for their own good. We don’t know simple elements of self-promotion. We GenY hipsters are damaging our futures by boomeranging back to our parents’ homes because, let’s face it, we’re not all Mark Zuckerberg and we aren’t likely to create the next great social innovation.

Data_Diva: Q5 – Accept the fact that nothing is certain – lots of ppl my age and older having gave 20+ yrs. to companies have learned this. #GenYChat

kmithani: Q1 Every1 wants a job they’re passionate about, but in a recession its more about just finding a job and keeping it no matter what #genychat

Yea I don’t really want to believe any of that. Would you? Do you? I wonder if the people who say these things honestly believe this or are they just going along with a status quo that dictates what we should become based on eons of socialization. These theories that arise out of the swampy ooze of dreams deferred and creativity long forgotten do nothing but placate the minds of those who are comfortable. It gets the children out of the house into their own where they can repeat a pattern of going to work every day and complaining about it within earshot of their children. I should follow your model? Why – because you’re incredibly happy with your life? I don’t think so.

Austin_Curtis: @2moroDocs The problem for most people is having a clear vision and then actually following the plan #genychat

So, I’m confronted with this dream…to be continued.

karabuffardi: For later, great video on career changes. People in Ad got fired and followed their passions: The Lemonade Movie #GenYChat
