If you enjoy writing and love the idea of doing your own thing, freelance writing is definitely a career to consider.
While it is relatively easy to began a freelance career, actually thriving and making a living with it takes a lot of work. With the following traits, however, you can find success with this business:
Be resilient. Rejection is a fact of freelance life. When starting out, you’re going to hear “no” a lot more than you hear “yes.” But it’s important to remember that 1) If you keep at it, continue improving your skills, and remain patient, more doors will open for you; and 2) A no now could mean just that– no for now. Just because someone doesn’t need your services at the moment or a magazine isn’t interested in your story at this time doesn’t mean it won’t happen down the road.
Be willing to work hard (and work long hours). A lot of people have the idea that freelancers spend a good part of their time surfing the web or watching soap operas. This is far from the truth, especially when you first start building your business. You have to spend a lot of time promoting yourself and your work and maybe even working on projects that pay little or no money. Realistically, you’ll probably work more hours than you ever would in an office job.
Have confidence. This is one of the most important characteristics you can have, and it will benefit you in other areas of your life as well. When you are confident in yourself and believe in your skills and talents, other people will too. Think about it: Would you want to do business with someone who wasn’t sure if they, or their work, were good enough? You have to be secure in knowing you can get the job done. And as they say, if you don’t have much confidence, just fake it ’til you make it!
