My mom always told me that I should never put all my eggs in one basket. You have to diversify. Do a little here and a little there. The problem is, don’t quit a sure thing for a maybe. while yes it would be easier to focus all of your attention on one thing, make sure that one thing is something that you can actually do well or better than your sure thing.
You have to at some point realize when a dream is just that and focus on reality. I’m not saying to give up on your dreams but if it’s not working you might want to do something that you’re actually good at until that dream comes true. so don’t quit your day job for your once a month hobby. Get me?

The trick is to find a day job that supports your writing. I take on freelance writing gigs from Elance to pay the bills and allow me time to write my stuff. The way I see it, any project that keeps me writing, even if I’m not passionate about it, makes me a better writer.
Hey Chris;
Thanks for commenting! I totally agree with you on finding a day job that supports your writing or whatever your passion is. I do that myself. I was more referring to people that drop the thing that’s supporting their dream in order to follow a dream that they know will never come true. At some point they have to be realistic and realize that it’s not working.
How does Elance work? I might have to give that a try.
Elance is a freelance bidding site where buyers post job projects for providers to bid on. It’s like Ebay for freelancers! There’s an entire section devoted to writing jobs and there are over 800 a month. I’ve tried all of the other big freelance sites on the net, and Elance is by far the best. They have escrow so you don’t have to worry about getting paid, and they really try to keep the quality of jobs high. Like any job site, there are still duds, but if you’re smart about what you bid on, you can land good contracts for good money.
They’re totally worth checking out: http://www.elance.com
You can also check out my blog at http://thesweatbox.blogspot.com and if you have questions about Elance or freelancing in general, give me a shout. I’d be happy to help out.
And thanks for the inspiration – My next blogpost is going to be about quitting your day job.
