A comment that Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon made on Larry King Live tonight struck a chord with me. She said, “for so long, no one cared…for so long, no one knew us.” Her comment touched me because it’s the truth – a very sad truth. Haiti fought for independence from France under the leadership Toussaint L’Ouverture – and won. Since then, Haitians have been fighting poverty, corruption, and exploitation. I’m ashamed that I, too, had forgotten Haiti.
This tragedy has given the world an opportunity to redeem itself. I’m proud to say that initial efforts have proven that we are up for the task. It’s my prayer that the aid continues. A year from now, I want to read that Haiti is being rebuilt – that this long-forgotten county has etched a mark on our hearts that cannot be erased.
I’m making my pledge. What will you do?
Garcelle, from now on, we will care. From now on, we will acknowledge you.
