I will tell you no lie!- Yes, I too, had and, in most circumstances still do not naturally gravitate to Country Western music. However, what sticks out to me at this moment is my recent viewing of Dick Gregory’s proposed anecdote to our culture’s addiction to derogatory music; and more specifically, the kind that demeans women. Gregory, in one of his classically sobering yet, comedic rants, boldly declared, “If I had my way today, I would make all black folks stay in the house for a month, and [have them] listen to nothing but “hillbilly” music.” (See vid here) His argument is one to ponder.
Needless to say, is made me go, “Hmmmmmmm.” Hence, this lovely post. (lol) As I am beginning to let my mind marinate on Gregory’s tough love, I wanted to share some budding talent…
Coffey Anderson and Valerie June are a few of the rarities that are turning your typical image of Country and Folk music on its soulful ear. I love musical artists that challenge your sensibilities and breaks stereotypes while at it; such as: “Black folks don’t do Country music.”…. Hmf!
Enjoy!
