Robert Trujillo: makes zines “Sew Seouful”

Robert Trujillo. Ahhh, where do I start?! Robert Trujillo is absolutely one of the most influential creatives that I have ever had the pleasure to interface with.- Hands down! This Bay area native- now Brooklyn dweller wreaks creative havoc as an artist, creative entrepreneur, visionary, and social activist. As such, I was bursting at the seams with excitement when he shared with me his newest zine project, Sew Seoulful-SS Vol. 2 . I love it! Of course, in true Trujillo fashion, not only did he share beautiful visuals but, he also unknowingly CHALLENGED me to learn about an often unseen type of illustration collection… ZINES!

I was grateful to Trujillo for providing me with a brief background about zines and their plight…

“Zines have a rich past with both people of color and anglos. In the punk movement you had hundreds of zines based on bands, the lifestyle that traveled wherever the bands did. In the political world of the Black Panthers, Young Lords, even US soldiers rebelling against the Vietnam War you had people handing out small books or pamphlets which contained unorthodox writing, art, cutting, and pasting.”

I would be remiss not to mention the other incredible art initiatives that Trujillo actively spearheads. Trujillo took great interest in confronting the lack of exposure that black and brown artists receive, and in result co-founded the Trust Your Struggle: Collective with fellow artists Borish, Skot La Rockwell, Yoshi, Cece, Bounce, Este, and Pele . You can follow the Trust Your Struggle movement via twitter here. Also, Trujillo’s career as an illustrator revealed to him the need for camaraderie and networking opportunities among illustrators who focus on books about people of color. As such, Trujillo launched the Come Bien Books: Collaboration. Needless to say, Trujillo is the truth! – So, lock in and support his many initiatives to make your world a bit more flava-ful.
