I used to think that I understood what that expression meant but as I get older the meaning is starting to morph into something unexpected. When I was younger, I thought I knew alot and understood even more. However, as I get older I realize how much I didn’t know and how much I still don’t know.
However, this saying now tells me that in our youth we have so much energy and so many opportunities that are wasted because we think we have it all figured out and that we don’t need anyone to tell us what to do or to give us any guidance.
Even though I am not that old, I have begun to use the – “Well, back in the day…” statement to open alot of advice that I give even though I wasn’t even a glimmer in anyone’s eye back in the day. I get the advice that follows that statement from my elders. I was fortunate to have some very wise grandparents that imparted a great deal of knowledge upon me even though I didn’t “get it” at the time. I thougt they were talking out of their neck trying to hold me back.
In hindsight, I see that they were helping me. They were showing me some bumps that were inevitable in my future. Youth is being wasted on our young because not only are many of them unwilling to listen to any advice but there seem to be fewer people trying to provide that advice.
Each one, teach one…even though you are not “that” old, its time to pick up the torch and start imparting some of your wisdom upon our young because their youth is being wasted on things that are not productive and provide no life lessons. Pull up some of your life lessons and spread the word…
